PRETERM INFANT CARE PROGRAM AT AIH

PRETERM INFANT CARE PROGRAM AT AIH

17/09/2026

Premature birth is not simply a baby being “smaller than usual”. When born before 37 weeks, especially before 32 weeks, many of the child's organs are still in the process of maturation. The smaller the gestational age, the more complex the care needs can be—ranging from respiration, circulation, and thermoregulation to nutrition, immunity, and neurological development.

Therefore, preterm infants require care within an Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, featuring continuous monitoring, prompt management procedures, and multi-specialty coordination tailored to each stage of treatment.

At the American International Hospital (AIH), the Preterm Infant Care Program is structured into two groups for infants under 32 weeks and those from 32 weeks onward, with a care plan customized according to the gestational age and condition of each child.

SPECIALIZED CAPACITY IN THE CARE OF EXTREMELY PRETERM INFANTS FROM 28 WEEKS

The Pediatrics and Neonatal Intensive Care team coordinates with Obstetrics even before birth, proactively preparing response plans and standing ready to receive the infant immediately after birth.

AIH receives and cares for extremely preterm infants from 28 weeks of age, including cases requiring resuscitation and intensive care in the NICU.

Respiratory support and postnatal stabilization: Assessment of respiration, circulation, and vital signs; selecting support methods according to gestational age and the progress of each baby.

Nutrition and growth: Developing feeding strategies based on gestational age and practical needs, supporting nutritional intake, weight gain, and maintaining a healthy growth rate.

Sucking – Swallowing – Breathing Coordination: Supporting infants in developing the ability to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing, gradually transitioning to safe and effective feeding methods.

Neurological Development: Assessing muscle tone, reflexes, and neurological developmental signs, contributing to the early identification of abnormalities that require monitoring and intervention.

Monitoring and Complication Prevention: Proactively detecting and managing common issues in extremely preterm infants such as dysglycemia, anemia, retinopathy of prematurity, and complications related to the lungs, brain, and digestive system…

Infection Control and Care Environment: Applying infection control measures to maintain a safe care environment throughout the treatment period in the NICU.

NICU CARE UNTIL READY FOR DISCHARGE

The treatment process at AIH aims not only to control acute issues but also to help infants maintain stable respiration, regulate body temperature, feed/nurse safely, grow appropriately, and meet all necessary conditions prior to discharge. Before the baby goes home, parents are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to continue caring for the baby at home.

Through this intensive care program, parents can be more proactive regarding planning and expenses, minimizing unexpected costs during treatment, and thereby peace of mind in accompanying their baby.

AIH RECEIVES AND TREATS TRANSFERRED PRETERM INFANTS

When premature infants are receiving care at other hospitals and require continued intensive care or treatment in the NICU, AIH is ready to coordinate admissions and transfer the infants into our specialized neonatal care system.

Upon admission, the Pediatrics-Neonatology and Neonatal Intensive Care team at AIH will comprehensively assess the infant's condition and perform necessary interventions, ensuring a seamless continuation of care and minimizing any disruptions in treatment.
